STATEMENT OF THE CHAIR OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF JEFFERSON COUNTY ON THE MAY 2026 ELECTION

This election season, the Jefferson County Democrats have organized to support candidates and issues that we believe can move our communities forward. We have spoken about and rallied for better infrastructure, better health care, and smarter use of our shared resources.

It is a privilege to be able to play our role in Democracy here in our community. Now, the ballots are cast and the counting is starting.

Whatever happens, we know that one election will not be enough. That we as a community need to continue to bring all of our collective wisdom and heart to bear on the problems before us.

Our communities have become more active in this election than your typical “off year primary.” To me, it signals a turning of the tides. A turning that is not partisan, but driven by our grass roots.

A turning towards greater involvement. And in turn, greater accountability by our elected representatives.

In the course of this campaign, I have gotten to know a lot of citizens who are so moved to improve their community that they donated time and effort. Some became candidates and stepped forward to be the center of our conversations. Some volunteered.

Whatever the results, I savor working with all the people I have encountered to bring new ideas and practices to Jefferson County and Oregon.

Some of you are really weird folks, but you all have shown your desire for a better Jefferson County. Thank you for being a part of this 250 year old experiment with me.

Joel Barker, Chair

Jefferson County Democrats
