The actor, activist and Zen Buddhist Priest Peter Coyote had a popular message this week regarding the protests in Los Angeles and those we are going to hold today. He says
“A protest is an invitation to a better world.”
This is such an exciting day and I am so happy that I will see so many of my Jefferson County Democrat friends at the No Kings Rally at the North Y of Highway 97 in Madras, across from Sonic at 12 pm.
I am not going in anger, but in celebration. I look forward to seeing you!
We are protesting to be seen, to remind our fellow Americans what we can be together, to invite them to join with us in seeing and empowering the many voices that make up America.
We are showing people that America is safety and hope.
That in America our communities are strong bonds.
That America has gratitude for those who came before and those who serve now.
Coyote goes on to explain why we protest peacefully. It is to help people accept our invitation.
No one accepts a ceremonial invitation when they’re being screamed at. More important you have to know who the real audience of the protest is. The audience is NEVER the police, the politicians, the Board of supervisors, The Congress, etc. The audience is always the American people, who are trying to decide who they can trust; who will not embarrass them. If you win them, you win power at the box office and power to make positive change. Everything else is a waste.
I see two powers in our protest:
- For one, I am lifted up to see others who agree with me. If you are afraid, angry, or in despair, it will lift you up to join with others who see the world you do. At the same time, your presence will be lifting up those around you!
- Second, this is how we make change. Non-violent protests are by far the most effective way to make change (great TED Talk at that link). The “3.5% rule” is that no movement has failed when 3.5% of the population has risen up. I am here to be counted. 3.5% of America is 12 million. That is doable! There are 12 million Americans that can see a better way!
I hope you join us today!
12pm, The North Y in Madras. Celebrate in red white and blue.
Not in Madras today? Find a rally wherever you are.
